Matthias, Florian and Manuel set out on their own with an unusual idea that should become a showcase project. They are planning one of the largest noble crayfish farms in the country in Guttaring, Carinthia. Currently, 17 ponds are being terraced. The entire facility will be supplied by a storage basin further upstream and with fresh water from a deep well. A new habitat is to be created once again for the endangered noble crayfish, which used to be common in our local waters and was almost wiped out by the crayfish plague. "The goal is to develop the crayfish as an innovative niche product and make it available for reintroduction and stocking, and to offer surpluses to the gastronomy industry as a delicacy. Inquiries from the upscale restaurant industry are already in place. Projects such as these, which represent a unique selling point for the region, strengthen domestic economic cycles in particular. The noble crayfish project is also intended to be in the spirit of nature conservation. Black alder trees will also be planted in the pond area, because the crayfish like to eat the leaves of this tree in the fall. In addition, chestnut trees and willows will serve as natural shade for the ponds. Between the ponds there are flower meadows, and also old orchards that are planted. We are glad that EUROPLAST boxes model CT/R3 were chosen for this project, which will be used as a hatchery for the fertilized dams. Other plans are to make the breeding area accessible to the public, schools and kindergartens.
"Great things can only come about if we start small".
